JPS Middle School Student is first Carson Scholar from Mississippi

Justin Bell, a sixth grader at Siwell Middle School, has been named a 2012 Carson Scholar by the Carson Scholars Fund. Each year, the Fund recognizes high achieving students in grades 4 – 11 who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and humanitarian qualities.

Seniors, anxious – ready to graduate.  What you won’t find is a run of the mill, cookie cutter educational experience. Much like the neighborhood itself, The Ed Center – as it’s often called – is a unique approach to addressing individual needs.  The school for the ‘bad’ kids? Hardly.

Jackson Police Precinct 4 Commander Wendall Watts is making a transition. On the job here since October 2010, Watts will take the position as chief of security for Central Mississippi Medical Center. Jackson Academy track coach Jason Williams found his calling in life at Mississippi College.

A 1994 MC graduate who earned a bachelor’s degree in business communications, Williams wasn’t exactly sure what would do for a career.

A Magee native who lettered in track and field for four years on the Clinton campus, Williams was advised by Choctaws track coach Billy Lamb and others to simply “do the thing you’re good at doing.”

And that solid piece of advice led Williams, who holds MC’s indoor and outdoor pole vault records, to enter track’s coaching ranks.
