Southwest basketball signs Smith brothers from Callaway HS

Southwest Mississippi Community College men’s basketball head coach Casey Carter has announced the signing of brothers Deville and Devion Smith for his 2012-13 squad. The Smiths attended Callaway High School.

Deville Smith, a transfer from Mississippi State, averaged 22.2 points 4.4 rebounds and 4 assists per game as a senior at Callaway.

Mississippi College Sports Hall of Fame Selects 2012 Class

Jackson Academy track coach Jason Williams found his calling in life at Mississippi College.

A 1994 MC graduate who earned a bachelor’s degree in business communications, Williams wasn’t exactly sure what would do for a career.

A Magee native who lettered in track and field for four years on the Clinton campus, Williams was advised by Choctaws track coach Billy Lamb and others to simply “do the thing you’re good at doing.”

And that solid piece of advice led Williams, who holds MC’s indoor and outdoor pole vault records, to enter track’s coaching ranks. The 40-year-old head boys and girls track coach at Jackson Academy and offensive coordinator of the JA football team, Williams is among eight new inductees into Mississippi College’s Sports Hall of Fame... Murrah High School Basketball Standout Signs with WNBA

LaSondra Barrett, a 2008 graduate of Murrah High School and former high school basketball standout,  has signed with the WNBA's Washington Mystics.

Among only 15 players nationwide invited to the televised draft, Barrett was selected by the Mystics in the first round.

Open house at Salvation Army's New Community Center

The Jackson Metro Area Salvation Army's new Corps Community Center is having an open house Friday, Feb. 24 from 5-7 p.m.

This is an opportunity for the public to take a tour of the community center, learn about the developmental sports program and adult fitness classes, and sign up for summer camp and performing arts lessions.

The community center is located at 570 E. Beasley Road in Jackson.
